~ A Special Guest ~

Behold I stand at the door and knock
but will you let me in?
I come to you with a shower of
wonderful blessings ~
Your reward will not be silver or gold
but a treasure worth much more,
But will you answer me when I knock
or leave me at your door?
In prayerful thought you asked of me
to show to you my face
To feel my presence by your side
and the love of my embrace ~
You asked me humbly to reveal
the power of My Word,
But all day and night you wait for me
and I wonder if you heard.
When morning dawned there was a knock
and you woke grumbling
In pure annoyance you opened the door
to a man cold-canvassing ~
Selling something too obscure
to wake you at this hour
You made a comment a slammed the door
and went to have a shower.
Towelling off you heard the phone
ringing down the hall
Dripping when you answer it
to find a stranger called ~
"Sorry, wrong number" you abruptly said
and then put down the phone
But when she called a few more times
you let it ring alone.
Muttering in extreme annoyance
such an inconvenience
People invading on your time
as it if were an offence ~
Wanting to prepare yourself
for the visit of your Lord
You didn't want distractions that
would keep Him from your door.
The table laid in plenty
for lunch with your guest
Hoping He would like the food
you chose to be the best ~
When you heard a knock upon your door
and you ran excitedly
But was disappointment that it was
just child in front of thee.
"Please ma'am, I am lost from home
can you please help me?
Do you know where I live
and do you know my street?"
With hesitation you locked the house
and walked the child home
Then quickly raced back not to miss
the guest you await alone.
Peering at the clock you note
that time is getting on
You wonder what is taking Him
when at last you hear a knock ~
The smile disappears from your face
when instead you see a man
"I've locked my keys inside my car,
could you please lend me a hand?"
Irritated at the thought
that this could take away
From the time that you could spend
with the Lord today ~
But still you walk out in the cold
and fumble with the lock
With a strip through the car window
then suddenly up it pops.
Grateful the man thanked you
but anxious to get away
You hurried back into the house
as the hours ticked away ~
Putting the food back in the fridge
unable to hide
The disappointment that you feel
the Lord had passed you by.
When all at once you hear a voice
as a woman stood alone
Asking if you could spare some food
for her children back at home ~
Wanting to keep it for your guest
but the hour was getting late
You helped her carry all the food
in abundance to her place.
When you got back it was now dark
and the day had slipped away
You knew the Lord was not coming
though He had promised to today ~
As you prepared for bed that night
you sadly asked Him why,
Why did He not come to your door,
why did He pass you by?
"My child, but I did come to you
four times to your door,
Once I even called you up
but you chose to ignore ~
That woman searching for her friend
had the need to know
In her despair there was someone
and she was not alone.
"For I was the canvasser in the morn
waking you from sleep,
I was the old man who locked his car
along with all his keys ~
And I was even the child all alone
who had lost his way
I was even the mother needing food
who you had helped today."
"But Lord, I had expected You
to come here as Yourself,
I wanted so much to see You
but these strangers I couldn't tell ~
I didn't know that it was You
who came to me all those times,
I didn't know You kept Your word
by teaching me in kind."
"My child, I am everyone
everywhere you meet,
I am in the mothers and businessmen
and children on the street ~
I am the young girl in need of care
searching for a hope,
I am everyone and everywhere
and they too need to know."
Behold I stand at the door and knock
but will you let Me in?
I've come to bring the gift of love
and bountiful blessings ~
But when you see someone else
standing at your door,
Will you let them in and meet their needs
or will you just ignore?
